Sometimes I can get caught up in something, and not realize I made a mistake. In hindsight, I know why I went to work at Wal-Mart, but I don’t know why I stayed so long.
I believe it is a confidence issue, because there is no way a person with a college education and advanced computer repair and programming skills, would be found working for Wal-Mart as an overnight stocker.
In my youth I’ve been zealous and messed up some decent computer jobs. After a few attempts it became hard to find a computer job, plus I live in St. Louis, which is not the most technical place to live. After seaching for years, I had grow so tired of searching. I began to settle. I was a dishwasher, roofer, temporary laborer, and the list goes on. Where were my standards?
I am not implying that a person should starve to death waiting on Prime Ribs, but I am saying that you don’t settle for anything that pops up. If you get set back, get some strength, stay focused, and when you get your courage up, go for it again.
For some people this process is fast, and for others its slow. One thing is for sure, the more you get use to things not working out as planned, the more creative you become, and the faster you can get on your feet and try again. I don’t want to make the mistakes my mom and dad made. Both of them near retirement age, and doing jobs well below their skill level.
Even if this business venture becomes a complete failure, I will have a smile on my face every time I reflect on my efforts.
